“Syriana” is the latest film from “Traffic” and “Alamo” scribe Stephen Gaghan, who also assumes the director’s chair to tell this story of big oil and Middle East politics. Based on the book by Robert Baer, “Syriana” juggles a number of plotlines. There’s veteran CIA agent “Bob Barnes” (George Clooney), raising a fuss with the head office over a Stinger missile he let get away from him during a mission. Meanwhile, Prince Nasir Al-Subaai (Alexander Siddig), the heir apparent to the throne of an oil-producing Persian Gulf nation, has granted natural gas drilling rights to the Chinese instead of American oil giant Connex, much to that company’s chagrin. This also has consequences for several of Connex’s immigrant field workers (Sonnell Dadral and Mazhar Munir), who now find themselves unemployed and faced with the prospect of being sent back to Pakistan.
Connex’s merger with upstart Texas oil company Killen, which has recently secured lucrative drilling rights in Kazakhstan, has also caught the eye of the Justice Department. Throw in attorney Bennett Holliday (Jeffrey Wright), who’s been brought in to perform due diligence for the company, and energy analyst Bryan Woodman (Matt Damon), who has decided to leverage a family tragedy in order to help Prince Nasir, and you can see that “Syriana” isn’t the sort of movie you want to take too many bathroom breaks in. As in “Traffic,” Gaghan leads us back and forth between these stories, gradually revealing their many connections, bringing most everything together by film’s end.

In a supposedly unshockable age, that's some kind of cinematic achievement.

Obscura = Latin for “dark”

Go into a very dark room on a bright day. Make a small hole in a window cover and look at the opposite wall. What do you see? Magic! There in full color and movement will be the world outside the window — upside down! This magic is explained by a simple law of the physical world. Light travels in a straight line and when some of the rays reflected from a bright subject pass through a small hole in thin material they do not scatter but cross and reform as an upside down image on a flat surface held parallel to the hole. This law of optics was known in ancient times.
The earliest mention of this type of device was by the Chinese philosopher Mo-Ti (5th century BC). He formally recorded the creation of an inverted image formed by light rays passing through a pinhole into a darkened room. He called this darkened room a "collecting place" or the "locked treasure room."
Aristotle (384-322 BC) understood the optical principle of the camera obscura. He viewed the crescent shape of a partially eclipsed sun projected on the ground through the holes in a sieve, and the gaps between leaves of a plane tree.
The Islamic scholar and scientist Alhazen (Abu Ali al-Hasan Ibn al-Haitham) (c.965 - 1039) gave a full account of the principle including experiments with five lanterns outside a room with a small hole.
In 1490 Leonardo Da Vinci gave two clear descriptions of the camera obscura in his notebooks. Many of the first camera obscuras were large rooms like that illustrated by the Dutch scientist Reinerus Gemma-Frisius in 1544 for use in observing a solar eclipse.
The image quality was improved with the addition of a convex lens into the aperture in the 16th century and the later addition of a mirror to reflect the image down onto a viewing surface. Giovanni Battista Della Porta in his 1558 book Magiae Naturalis recommended the use of this device as an aid for drawing for artists.
The term "camera obscura" was first used by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler in the early 17th century. He used it for astronomical applications and had a portable tent camera for surveying in Upper Austria.
The development of the camera obscura took two tracks. One of these led to the portable box device that was a drawing tool. In the 17th and 18th century many artists were aided by the use of the camera obscura. Jan Vermeer, Canaletto, Guardi, and Paul Sandby are representative of this group. By the beginning of the 19th century the camera obscura was ready with little or no modification to accept a sheet of light sensitive material to become the photographic camera.
The other track became the camera obscura room, a combination of education and entertainment. In the 19th century, with improved lenses that could cast larger and sharper images, the camera obscura flourished at the seaside and in areas of scenic beauty. Today the camera obscura is enjoying a revival of interest. Older camera obscuras are celebrated as cultural and historic treasures and new camera obscuras are being built around the world.

"The Great Train Robbery" was made in the U.S. in 1903 and (I quote) "it has always been regarded as a landmark and righly so, but was certainly not a feature." the film was it was 703 feet long and ran for 12 minutes. But "The Great Train Robbery" was a continuous film. Two other films/movies are worth noting. The first was called "Soldiers of the cross" made in 1900 and ran a total of 3000 feet. (I quote) " it was probably the first film of some dramatic content of that hitherto unparalleled overall length" its first presentation was in Melbourne Town Hall (Australia) in 13 september 1900. The film was about the Salvation Army. The film was not a continuous film, but film and slides intergated.The Story of the Kelly Gang (also screened as Ned Kelly and His Gang) is widely regarded as the world's first feature length film. Its 70 minute length was certainly unprecedented when it was released in 1906. The movie traces the life of the legendary Australian bushranger, Ned Kelly (1855-1880). It was written and directed by Charles Tait. The film's actual reel length is 1219.2 metres. It was released in Australia on the 26th December 1906 at the Melbourne Town Hall. The movie starred Godfrey Cass, Nicholas Brierley, Elizabeth Tait and John Tait.

Either way, there's no denying the impact of this phobic, Prozac-popping Dane. What are the characters saying to each other, if anything?
How much time has passed between the last frame of the storyboard and the current one?
Where the "camera" is in the scene? Close or far away? Is the camera moving?

Why make a storyboard?
Creating a storyboard will help you plan your animation out shot by shot. You can make changes to your storyboard before you start animating, instead of changing your mind later. You will also be able to talk about your animation and show your storyboard to other people to get feedback on your ideas.

Storyboard Language
CLOSE-UP SHOT: A close range of distance between the camera and the subject.DISSOVLE: A transition between two shots, where one shot fades away and simultaneously another shot fades in. FADE - A transition from a shot to black where the image gradually becomes darker is a Fade Out; or from black where the image gradually becomes brighter is a Fade In. HIGH CAMERA ANGLE: A camera angle which looks down on its subject making it look small, weak or unimportant. JUMP CUT: A rapid, jerky transition from one frame to the next, either disrupting the flow of time or movement within a scene or making an abrupt transition from one scene to another. LEVEL CAMERA ANGLE: A camera angle which is even with the subject; it may be used as a neutral shot. LONG SHOT: A long range of distance between the camera and the subject, often providing a broader range of the setting. LOW CAMERA ANGLE: A camera angle which looks up at its subject; it makes the subject seem important and powerful. PAN: A steady, sweeping movement from one point in a scene to another. POV (point of view shot): A shot which is understood to be seen from the point of view of a character within the scene. REACTION SHOT- 1.: A shot of someone looking off screen. 2.: A reaction shot can also be a shot of someone in a conversation where they are not given a line of dialogue but are just listening to the other person speak. TILT: Using a camera on a tripod, the camera moves up or down to follow the action. ZOOM: Use of the camera lens to move closely towards the subject.

Strange, this hobby of mine, watching films. I saw two documentaries in one year about men obsessed with grizzly bears. Grizzly Man is the better of the two in every conceivable way.Shortly after seeing Project Grizzly (do a search), an empty, unfunny, uninspiring and poorly made documentary about an idiot in a tin suit, I heard about Grizzly Man. I heard it was a class act, and I heard right.I'll leave the detail to other, far better reviewers. But I've just watched Grizzly Man for the first time - I'm a fan of Werner Herzog, I believe Aguirre Wrath of God to be one of the finest, most scorchingly memorable films that I've ever seen - and I am deeply touched.To those who simply want to "hear the tape" ... you are categorically wrong. Watch this personal, moving, surprising, shocking, unpredictable film, and maybe you will understand Herzog's tasteful decision to leave the tape unheard. I hope Jewel Palovak has destroyed the tape, because nobody with compassion needs to hear it. Hearing the sound of Tim and his girlfriend being attacked and eaten by a grizzly would have destroyed the film's (and Timothy Treadwell's story's) dignity, and would have reduced Grizzly Man to not much more than a snuff movie.

38. Takashi Miike

If Miike had channelled his energies into making one film every year, rather than his customary six or seven, he could be a lot further up the list. Not that you'd want him to change. Miike's casual technical brilliance and total disregard for taste are what makes his best films such a joy. Sure, there are plenty of misfires and generic gangster pictures to his credit, too, but there's plenty of everything when it comes to Miike, surely that can't be bad?

Heading the list of the pop-promo-and-TV-commercial wonderkids of the early 90s, Fincher successfully brought that world's visual inventiveness into the feature film world. In Alien 3, Seven, and Fight Club, he forged a string of visceral, unforgettable images; but his subsequent career has been dogged by aborted projects. Fincher's most recent film, the unremarkable Panic Room, saw him in a holding pattern - it's certainly cost him a few points.

As he did in 1993 and 1997, Spielberg follows up a summer blockbuster with a far more serious work. In this case, it's the aftermath of the Black September terrorist attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. The film states it is inspired by real events, so how much is real and fictionalized remains to be seen. That doesn't stop this from being a superior motion picture. With a screenplay by Tony Kushner (Angels in America) and Eric Roth (Forrest Gump), this is Spielberg's best work in years.

40. Gus Van Sant
A casual observer would be forgiven for thinking that there are two Gus Van Sants at work within American cinema. The first makes gloopy studio fodder like Good Will Hunting and the odious Finding Forrester. The second is the visionary auteur of Drugstore Cowboy, Gerry, My Own Private Idaho and the Palme d'Or-winning Elephant (an elegant, ultimately devastating take on the Columbine tragedy). For the record, it is the second Gus Van Sant who gets the votes here.

The difference between this show and others is that it takes full advantage in exploring this fertile ground. It doesn't fall back on its identity, taking for granted an audience that is starved for intelligent entertainment, but explores and expands beyond the one-note characters of "Will & Grace" or simply identifiable caricatures of "Queer Eye". Instead it is a multi-layered tapestry playing like a little epic, spanning the lesbian experience. I won't say that "L" is going to "strike a civil rights blow" for "progressives", but I will say that its sliver demographic has never been so well spoken for and the show never stops going all out to entertain.
